Subtlehaus is a detached two-storey Japanese house in Sakai, Osaka, operated by Subtlety Limited Co. The house began as an artist residency and is now open, at a reduced rate, to artists and arts organisations who pass our review, as a base for making work, residencies and short working stays.

Rate

There are two rates, both for the whole house, and both subject to review.

Arts media

Arts media pay NT$100 per day for the whole stay, up to 90 days, in exchange for promotional material. During the stay you produce images or writing about the house for Art Express and Subtlehaus to use on our own channels. Format, quantity and licensing are agreed at the time of application.

Both rates require review. Please provide a portfolio, exhibition history, organisation registration, proof of enrolment, or the accounts and past work behind your channel. We confirm on receipt. Without approval, standard short-stay rates apply.

The House

The ground floor holds the kitchen and dining room, with separate bathroom and toilet. Upstairs are a studio and a tatami bedroom, plus a small balcony. The studio has a large work table and a picture rail for hanging work, shooting portraits or documenting a process; the bedroom sleeps three on Japanese futons. The kitchen has an induction hob, fridge, microwave and basic cookware for self-catering.

How to apply

1. Submit the enquiry form with material for review and your preferred dates
2. We reply within three working days with the outcome and available dates
3. Once dates and fees are agreed we send a payment link; payment confirms the booking
4. Before arrival we send a guide covering directions, equipment and house rules

The house is small, and large enough. It is meant to be somewhere you can work quietly, not a hotel.
